Room 7's Kiwiana Museum

This term for our Inquiry we looked at Home grown and what makes New Zealand so unique. Room 7 began by looking at the Kiwiana museum in Otorohanga and the icons that they had displayed down there. We then worked in pairs and chose an icon that we wanted to investigate further. After researching that icon we presented our findings in our museum that we ran in our classroom at the end of the term. We hope you like them.

Farewell to our good friend and classmate Lereagan!

On the last day of term two, Room 7 had to say farewell to our classmate Lereagan. He is moving to the other side of Auckland with his family. We will miss you Lereagan and we hope that you enjoy your new school!

Piha and Anawhata's trip to the Marae

On Monday 28th of June, Piha and Anawhata pod went to visit our local Marae, Hoani Waititi Marae in Glen Eden. This was a follow up to our unit based on the Marae, where we have been learning about a powhiri and Maori protocol. We had a wonderful day and we were treated to a real cultural experience while we were there.

Home Learning Task - What if?

For home learning this week the children of Room 7 were asked to think about the following question:

"What if you could travel back in time?"

They were asked to reflect and comment on this question. The following is an example written by Zeenat Ali:

The answer to this question is due to the book I have been reading, Anne Frank's Story. I have been so sad when I read this story that I felt if only this terrible thing known as the Holocaust had never happened. I hate to think how Adolf Hitler had made the entire German people think that Jews were the cause of their problems. Who knows what those 6 million people could have given back to the world in maybe music, art and inventions. Therefore, I would like to travel back in time when Hitler was trying to get power. He wrote his ideas in his book Mein kampf. If I was there,I would try and stop his book from being published. I would also try to get the world's attention and warn them about what Hitler was going to do. He wanted to get rid of the European Jews and sent them to concentration camps. I would try and get people to protest against Hitler and get United States, Britain and other countries to stop him from killing all the people he did. I think it would been wonderful to be at the concentration camps and give food to the starving and save more people from dying. However my mum tells me history is real, gritty and dirty with highs and lows, real people bleeding and maybe something we can do is make sure that there is never another Holocaust and we all respect life even, if we are different from each other.

Room 7 is playing with the new Apple Ipad!

For the next 2 weeks Room 7 are lucky enough to have the new Apple Ipad in their room. We are all learning how to use it and all the cool applications that it has. Here are what some of the children in Room 7 think:

Javaughn saids:

"I think it is really cool to have an ipad in our room. It has cool games and functions like the ipod touch"

Kiana saids:

"I think it is a little confusing, a bit hard to control, but I really want to learn how to use it properly because it looks really fun"

Josh saids:

"It's very cool and very interactive because you can touch it. I am still trying to get use to it. There are alot of applications to choose from, and I think that it is like a touch screen computer but better because you can hold it in your hands. I would love to have one all the time in class"

Neha saids:

"It is really fun, I like the touch screen and it is so quick. I like that when you turn the screen in your hands the picture turns too. There are lots of learning games for children on it. I would love to be able to have one all the time in class"

Mihi - Room 7

As part of our topic for term two this year, Room 7 have been learning about Mihi. A Mihi is a formal greeting, it is a way for people to introduce themselves and show others where they have come from. Each child had to research where they were born to help them find out which mountain and body of water that they belong to. In their Mihi you will also here the children talk about their mother and father and the school that they belong to.

My Wild Thing - By Joshua Meads

My wild thing is the deadliest creature to walk the Earth. His poisonous fangs hang out of his mouth like a Saber-tooth cat, and his poison is so powerful that it can kill 10 adult Polar bears in 120 nano seconds. His pitch black waterproof fur smells like a sewer. He is as deadly as a King cobra, and is as tall as Mount Everest and K2 combined. My wild thing's eyes are as red as lava, and his teeth are as sharp as a dagger. He will eat anything that dares to come within a mile near him. He is as fierce as an adult T-Rex, but is nearly impossible to see at night. My wild thing prefers to keep his distance from humans, and his teeth are as yellow as the sun at mid-summer. He is as silent as a train tunnel that has been abandoned for 68 years. He is as fast as he speed of light. My wild thing is more deadly than the human brain can imagine

All about Mataio

My name is Mataio. I am 8 turning 9. I have one brother and two half brothers. I also have one sister and two stepsisters. I have two dogs, they are very friendly, one of them is a German Shepherd and one Siberian Husky. My favourite song is Little Black Box sung by Stan Walker in Australian Idol. I like to ride skateboards, Helleys, Ripstik. I love chocolate, white chocolate ice cream and all kinds of junk food and that is me.

I go to Summerland Primary School, which is just around the corner from my house! My hobbies are drumming, and collecting car magazines. My favourite food is sushi, Chinese food, and Indian food. I have short, black hair and dark brown eyes. My skin colour is tan. Every Tuesday, at four o’clock after school, I play tenpin bowling at Lincoln Road. I am a tiny bit colour blind. My great great Uncle fought for the air force in the Pacific War, but his plane was shot down by the Japanese.

In Malaysia, I touched a small Albino python, and my dad put it around his neck! I have done a lot of things in my life and I enjoy it.

My favourite sports are netball, jazz, tap, swimming, ice-skating and basketball. I hate carrots. On holiday at the beach I found a sick penguin. I put it in the water and the penguin died.

Cross Country 2010
